West Atherton Neighborhood | Atherton Homes For Sale & Real Estate
Neighborhood Introduction & History
West Atherton may be the toniest of all of the neighborhoods in the town of Atherton, which Forbes magazine recently ranked as the wealthiest zip code in the country for the second year in a row. Home to some of Silicon Valley’s most elite executives and investors, the neighborhood is one of the most sought-after residential areas in the San Francisco Bay Area. Like all of Atherton, homes are located on lots of one or more acres, and tend to be secluded behind private gates and large hedges. This area’s attractive setting, excellent schools, and close proximity to transportation routes, shopping, and Stanford University further increase its desirability. These homes typically sell for $10 million and above.
Housing types & styles in the Neighborhood
Nestled deep into the Atherton suburban-side, West Atherton is for the 1%. The area is exclusively residential, with dazzling homes and reclusive residential terrain. Home prices here run from $3 million on the low end to $45 million on the high end. Homes tend to have very large lots, huge square footages, and luxurious amenities. Like many Atherton communities, West Atherton is thriving with its many huge homes plotted on estate-like properties. These residences are usually protected by cement walls or large, charming gates that prevent you from getting a good glimpse from the street. They, of course, come with a hefty price tag (think a couple million on the low end). West Atherton is also fairly sparse (mostly because of the many enormous properties). As a whole, the neighborhood enjoys its bushy, secluded landscape, especially the tree-lined street of Atherton Avenue.
Restaurants & Shopping
West Atherton’s proximity to Menlo Park allows residents to enjoy a wide variety of shopping and dining options. Menlo Park features unique and upscale retail shops and restaurants surrounded by tree lined streets. Chains are common here, too, however, affording residents a wide variety of choices. Palo Alto, Redwood City, and Woodside are also adjacent to West Atherton, increasing the shopping and dining options further. West Atherton lies between 280 and El Camino Real, offering easy access to the amenities of the Peninsula.
Family Lifestyle, Parks & Activities
At the center of West Atherton social life is the renowned Menlo Circus Club, which resides on the location of Atherton’s original home. This beautiful, private country club features state-of-the-art equestrian facilities, tennis courts, pools and a stunning clubhouse. West Atherton’s proximity to downtown Menlo Park and Palo Alto affords residents easy access to farmers’ markets, parks, concerts, festivals, nightlife, and a variety of family activities. Menlo Country Club, Sharon Heights Country Club, and Stanford Gold Course are nearby and offer golf and dining. Just across 280 lie countless parks and nature preserves that offer hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, and other recreation. This area’s proximity to Stanford University also means access to the campus’ wonderful facilities including the Cantor Arts Center, Memorial Church, Stanford Stadium, and Bing Concert Hall.
